While이랑 Whereas, 둘 다 대조인데 느낌이 왜 다를까

📖 오늘의 문법: While vs Whereas (대조를 나타내는 접속사)

• 둘 다 “~인 반면"이라는 **대조(contrast)**의 의미로 쓰이지만, while은 대조 말고도 “~하는 동안"이라는 시간의 의미로도 쓰여서 문맥에 따라 해석이 갈림 → While she was cooking, he set the table. (시간) vs While I love coffee, my sister prefers tea. (대조)
• whereas는 오직 대조만 나타내고, 시간의 의미는 전혀 없음. 그래서 의미가 훨씬 명확하고 깔끔하게 전달됨 → Whereas the old system was slow, the new one is lightning fast.
• 격식(formality) 차이도 큽니다. while은 일상 대화와 글 모두에서 자연스럽게 쓰이는 반면, whereas는 보고서, 계약서, 뉴스, 논문 같은 formal한 문어체에서 주로 등장 → 회화에서 whereas를 쓰면 다소 딱딱하게 들릴 수 있음
