No sooner ~ than / Hardly ~ when
두 사건이 거의 동시에, 하나가 끝나자마자 다른 하나가 벌어졌다는 느낌을 살리고 싶을 때 원어민들은 No sooner ~ than이나 Hardly/Scarcely ~ when(before) 구문을 쓴다.
- No sooner had + 주어 + p.p. ~ than + 주어 + 과거형
- No sooner had I sat down than the phone rang. →
- Hardly/Scarcely had + 주어 + p.p. ~ when/before + 주어 + 과거형
- Hardly had we left the house when it started pouring rain. →
- No sooner 뒤에는 than, Hardly/Scarcely 뒤에는 when이나 before가 짝을 이룬다.
- 도치를 쓰지 않고 평서문으로 풀면 *I had no sooner sat down than the phone rang.*처럼 쓸 수도 있지만, 뉴스·소설·연설에서는 도치형이 훨씬 흔하다.
💡 Tip: “~하자마자 ~했다"를 말하고 싶은데 As soon as가 너무 밋밋하게 느껴진다면, No sooner/Hardly 도치구문을 꺼내보자.
