📖 오늘의 문법: No matter how/what/who — 양보의 부사절 (Concessive Clauses)
- “No matter + 의문사” 는 “아무리 ~하더라도, ~이든 상관없이"라는 뜻으로, 어떤 조건에도 결과가 바뀌지 않음을 강조할 때 쓴다.
- 구조: No matter + how/what/who/where/when/which + 주어 + 동사, 주절.
- No matter how + 형용사/부사: No matter how hard you try (아무리 열심히 노력해도)
- No matter what + 명사/절: No matter what happens (무슨 일이 일어나도)
- No matter who: No matter who calls (누가 전화하든)
- No matter where/when: 장소·시간에 상관없이
- 이 표현은 however / whatever / whoever / wherever / whenever 한 단어로도 바꿔 쓸 수 있다 (좀 더 formal한 느낌). 예: No matter what you say = Whatever you say.
- 주의할 점: “no matter how” 뒤에는 반드시 형용사/부사가 바로 붙는다 (No matter how tired you are, ~). 명사가 오면 “no matter what"을 쓴다.
💡 Tip: “No matter what happens"와 “Whatever happens"는 거의 동일한 뜻이지만, 회화에서는 no matter 구문이, 격식 있는 글에서는 however/whatever류가 조금 더 자주 보인다.
