📖 오늘의 문법: Despite / Although / Even Though (양보의 표현)
- although, though, even though → 뒤에 **주어 + 동사(절, clause)**가 온다: Although it was raining, we went out.
- despite, in spite of → 뒤에 **명사, 대명사, 동명사(-ing)**가 온다: Despite the rain, we went out. / Despite being tired, she kept working.
- even though는 although보다 의미가 더 강하고 놀라움·의외성을 강조할 때 자주 쓰임: Even though he studied all night, he failed the test.
- though는 although와 거의 같은 뜻이지만 더 캐주얼하고, 문장 맨 뒤에 단독으로도 쓸 수 있음: I like the plan. I have some concerns, though.
- 흔한 실수: despite 뒤에 바로 절(주어+동사)을 붙이는 것 →
Despite he was tired(X) → Despite being tired / Although he was tired (O)
💡 Tip: “절이 오면 although/though/even though, 명사·-ing가 오면 despite/in spite of” — 뒤에 오는 게 문장이냐 명사냐만 확인하면 됩니다.
